SCPCR chairpersons calls for monthly raids
SHILLONG: The city police have sent a stern directive to all hotels here in the wake of the alleged trafficking case at Marvelene’s Inn and Guest House, owned by Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh’s family, at Rilbong.
East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said it is mandatory for hotels and resorts to follow rules like registering every guest who checks in and installing CCTV cameras.
Despite the district police issuing frequent advisories in this regard, several hotels in the city are flouting the rules, said Kharkrang and added that legal action will be taken against erring hotels. “If we come across any such loopholes, we will not hesitate to take legal action like what we had done in the past.” Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Meena Kharkongor said on Tuesday police should conduct raids on hotels and guest houses in the city every month to stop cases of trafficking.
Pointing out that the alleged prostitution of the 14-year-old girl at the city guest house is not a one-off case, Kharkongor said, “We will write to the DGP and the SP on Tuesday that these incidents are very serious,” she said and added that some more people are involved in this racket.
The girl’s statement was recorded on Monday with the Child Welfare Committee.
Meanwhile, the SP said it was surprising that the CCTV camera at Marvelene’s Inn was not functional for many days.
Police raided the guest house, which is registered in the name of HDR’s son Nathaniel Osbert Rymmai, last Friday for a case related to trafficking of a 14-year-old girl and alleged prostitution. Two persons, a woman who brought the girl to the hotel and a waiter, have been arrested so far. The accused have been remanded to five-day police custody.
The SCPCR chairperson said the woman is desperately trying to secure bail for herself and she should not be given the bail.
