SHILLONG: The State holiday on Friday, the last day for depositing old currency notes, will not affect banking in the city, said an SBI official from the bank’s urban sector on Thursday.
The Centre has declared December 30 as the last date for depositing old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. The day coincides with the 154th death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah which is a State holiday.
The SBI official said it would not be a problem for people. “For the last 2-3 days there was less rush to the bank. Although Friday is a holiday there will not be a problem,” he said.
Also, no unusual deposits have been detected by SBI so far, informed officials in charge of urban and rural sectors. “No notice from the Income Tax Department for inquiry has come so far,” said the SBI official.
Similarly, the official in charge of the rural sector said the number of people visiting the bank’s branches has reduced now and the deadline served by the central government would not be an issue.
All bank branches witnessed heavy rush following the demonetisation last month.
Initially, the arrival of Rs 2000 notes did not ease the problem as people were in need of smaller denomination notes. There was shortage of Rs 100 notes.
The problem eased after ATM outlets started dispensing Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes. Also, shopping malls, departmental stores and petrol pumps started using POS machines to make things easier for the public.
