TURA: In a move aimed at curbing drunk driving and illegal sale of alcohol to prevent untoward incidents during the celebration of New Year on December 31 and January 1, Garo Hills police have gone on an overdrive to ensure 2017 is ushered in peacefully and problem free.
North Garo Hills police have been holding several Naka (road checking) at the entry and exit points of the district since the past few days to check the flow of illegal supply from neighbouring Assam, notorious for violation of prohibition laws during major celebrations.
Police team from Mendipather police station intercepted a Tata Magic vehicle coming from Assam and found inside several crates of stashed alcohol of various brands totalling 44640 ml of the intoxicants.
Despite strict Supreme Court guidelines on the establishment of liquor stores and sale of its products, black marketers have managed to evade the government dragnet and continued with their business.
