SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to provide important certificates digitally to the citizens.
“We have held a review meeting in December last to introduce digital governance and certain areas have also been identified especially those related to disbursement of certificates,” chief secretary K.S Kropha told The Shillong Times.
According to the chief secretary, the issuing of domicile certificates, besides birth and death certificates, among others, will be carried out digitally and in this regard January 21, which is Meghalaya Day, has been set as the deadline for East Khasi Hills and other 10 districts.
The IT Department has already assured that it will adhere to the deadline set by the government in providing the essential documents through online applications.
The next set of digitalised activities will be identified by April and work will be carried out by the Department in association with NIC. “We will review the status of digital governance and the State Government cannot lag behind in this regard,” the chief secretary said.
He, however, admitted that the State is handicapped since there are issues related to internet connectivity as in the case of East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills and that need to be addressed by the Centre.
On the social sector, the chief secretary said the government will focus on health and education sectors in 2017 as these are the areas which need urgent focus.
To a question, the chief secretary said there is significant improvement in the dropout rate of students over the years though a lot needs to be done in the education sector.
“The education system needs to be fully revamped and strengthened,” he added.
As far as law and order is concerned, there is significant improvement in Garo Hills, the chief secretary said.
“We will sustain the momentum so that there will be normalcy,” he added.
