SHILLONG: Two persons have been arrested from near Diengpasoh toll gate on the Shillong Bypass for smuggling ganja from Tripura to Bihar.
The Customs Headquarters Preventive Unit in the city, which had prior information, intercepted a container truck with Bihar registration number near the toll gate on Shillong Bypass on Tuesday and seized 744.07 kg of high-quality cannabis valued over Rs 43 lakh.
The consignment of ganja was concealed in a specially built chamber behind the driver’s cabin. The driver and the helper were arrested under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and the vehicle was seized. A case has been registered.
The contraband was from Tripura, which has become a major source of ganja in the recent past, and was being ferried to Bihar.
Investigation is on to net other persons involved in the contraband trade.
