SHILLONG: Mawhati legislator Julius Dorphang, who is accused of raping the 14-year-old minor girl from Ichamati twice admitted to his crime, police said on Wednesday.
“He has admitted to sexual assault for now. He is cooperating with investigators. So no further police custody is required,” City (SP) Vivek Syiem said.
It was on Saturday last after his arrest from the inter-state bus terminus (ISBT) at Gorchuk in Guwahati that he was remanded in five-day police custody and since his remand is ending, the police will produce him before the court on Thursday.
Police are planning to file the charge sheet against the accused at the earliest.
The involvement of Julius in the crime came to fore after the victim reported about the sex racket case on December 16 to the police after she was abused by a client at Marvelene’s Inn, Rilbong.
A series of arrests followed the girl’s complaints to the police.
