Nongpoh: The residents of the oldest village of Ri Bhoi District suffer due to the worse road condition. The roads connecting to this village are in dilapidated condition.
The matter was brought into light when members of the FKJGP North Khasi Hills District Unit led by its vice president Lumlang Mawnai and general secretary Luistar Lyngdoh inspected Mawdem village under Jirang Constituency with a distance of almost 27 kms from Warmawsaw village.
During the inspection, it was found that the road connecting to this particular areas consisting of 6 villages had badly affected the daily commuters as most of the populations here are engaged in farming activity.
Headman of Mawdem village, Phrowel Dyia informed that despite being the oldest village in the District, the lackadaisical attitude of the local representatives and the state government has put the villagers at large to a very difficult situation, especially during the rainy seasons.
Dyia is concerned as the majority of the villagers are engaged in agricultural sector, but to the pathetic condition of the road, most of the produces could not reach the market, thereby making great loss to them.
“As road is the main backbone of rural economy, the traditional heads of this areas has in the past several times made their pleas to the government and the local representatives to take initiative in providing better road connectivity to this area, but our pleas and request seems to have fallen on deaf ears’ Dyia lamented.
The Headman further said that the road has been taken charge by the PWD Department for almost four decades now, yet surprisingly nothing has been done by the government in providing proper road connectivity to the villagers of this area.
Meanwhile, FKJGP general secretary, Luistar Lyngdoh said that the organisation will take up this matter to the state government and a petition of the same will be submitted to the PWD Minister for sanctioning funds to construct and blacktop this particular road which is used by six villages under Mawdem area.
Lyngdoh also assures the villagers help and support and promised to work hand in hand.
