TURA: The BJP on Saturday deplored the Mukul Sangma-led government for being “notoriously corrupt and inefficient” and called for a change of guard in Meghalaya in the 2018 Assembly elections.
Addressing his first press conference in Tura at the party’s newly inaugurated office at Danakgre, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav attacked the government for failing to bring substantial development in the last decade.
“I have been a regular visitor to Meghalaya for the last 10 years and no major development has taken place. The condition of the Government can be gauged from the closed down factories and industries bringing development to a standstill.” Ridiculing the State machinery over recent incidents of dissidence and scams, the BJP in charge of Meghalaya said the Mukul government has become a household name for two reasons – political infighting and high level of corruption and inefficiency.
Madhav said the divisive politics of “certain Congress governments” in the North East is creating hurdles for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development mission for which the common man is suffering.
“Lack of development under the Mukul Sangma government is there for everyone to see. It needs to be shown the door because BJP will lead the next government in Meghalaya,” said BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli.
Citing the example of Manipur where an economic blockade has severely hit the economy and divided the hill and the plain, Madhav accused the Ibobi Singh government of deliberately playing politics at the expense of people’s plight.
“He (Ibobi) is responsible for the turmoil in Manipur because he has allowed the blockade to continue since he has a political agenda for the upcoming elections. The Centre provided 100 companies of central paramilitary force but he did not act. His selfish inhuman agenda has made the people of the state suffer immensely,” Madhav said and added that the imminent victory of BJP in the February polls is the silver lining.
Singh is one of the longest serving Congress chief ministers in the region.
Meghalaya too is bound for polls next year and Madhav predicted BJP’s coming to power in the State in 2018.
