Claims Lapang too guilty of molestation
SHILLONG: Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), the banned militant outfit, on Monday broke its silence on the rape of a 14-year-old girl by its former chairman Julius Dorphang, now an MLA, and accused the Congress-led government of trying to shield the legislator.
Terming the rape and trafficking case as “political”, the outfit said the recent transfer of the officer in charge of Madanrting police station “only indicates the involvement of many politicians in the case”.
In a statement issued on Monday, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said the “people in power” also shielded former chief minister D.D Lapang who, he alleged, molested a doctor when he held the health portfolio.
The outfit also alleged that politicians have turned Meghalaya Houses outside the State and the MLAs’ hostel here into sex racket dens.
Referring to the murder of two women by dreaded criminal Full Moon Dhar at Mawpdang in 2008, Nongtraw said the gunning down of Dhar in 2009 “still raises the question as to why he was killed”.
“The insecurity of women and children is not only from Full Moon but the real threats are posed by politicians in power,” the outfit said and alleged that Congress leaders were involved in illegal activities.
HNLC also claimed that its ‘Operation Kyllang’ has helped in curbing crime against women and children to a large extent.
The outfit also lambasted politicians for not addressing the real issues concerning the state.
‘Civil war’
Referring to the recent celebration of the 45th Statehood Day, the HNLC leader said the Council fails to see that the State has fully attained its political freedom when it is yet to have proper demarcated boundary.
Stating that the people should defy the statement made by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma that all the tribes can live in harmony, he said, “Such statements are just to suit his political interest.”
Alleging that the Garos are illegally encroaching on Khasi Hills, he warned that a time would come when there would be civil war in the State.
