BSF alert ahead of R-Day

SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya Frontier, has intensified security along the Indo-Bangla border for the Republic Day celebrations on Friday.
The BSF PRO said an ‘Operation Alert’ has been launched along the border and additional personnel have been deployed for the occasion. Senior officers, including the inspector general and the additional director general, are already camping on the border.
Asked if the BSF was perceiving any threat from rebels, the PRO denied saying the movement of the militants has been restricted owing to the ongoing operations. However, the security personnel are leaving no stone unturned.
Meghalaya shares a 443-km international border with Bangladesh and there are several unmanned gaps. Smuggling of cattle and contraband items is common along the border.
On how the BSF is managing the gaps along the border, the official said barbed wires have been put up, besides lighting up the areas, to prevent smugglers from crossing the international border.
