SHILLONG: The regional office of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) wrote to its headquarters in Delhi on Monday reminding it to take up one-time maintenance of the dilapidated Umsning road, sources said.
According to the sources, till the time work on the Umsning bypass is on, the concessionaire has the responsibility to go for patch repairing of the road.
“Since the bypass will be complete in June-July and it will be a rainy season, the regional office has asked the headquarters to go ahead with the one-time maintenance now and not wait for the completion of the Umsning bypass,” the sources said. It may be mentioned that the concessionaire of the project has to maintain the road for another 15 years. NHAI is working on all the issues like flooding, landslides and construction of foot bridges.
The sources said the delay in repairing Umsning road was due to contract problems and the matter has been discussed with the Chief Secretary.
The Rs 3.5-crore proposal for one-time maintenance of the road was given to the NHAI headquarters long back but it is still pending.
