JOWAI: The Jaintia Awakening Movement (JAM) has demanded the shutdown of the Amsarin weighbridge at Sohkha under Amlarem sub-division in West Jaintia Hills.
The JAM activists led by their central body president Wanshwa Mawlong following a spot inspection of the weighbridge alleged that the operator of the weighbridge, Deipormi Dkhar failed to comply with the Meghalaya Installation, Regulation, Maintenance and Operation of Weighbridge Rules 2009 and the amended act 2015.
“I condemn the Transport department for overlooking the guidelines before allowing the lessee/ operator to run the weighbridge,” Mawlong said.
Talking about the irregularities Mawlong said, “There is no adequate parking and lay-by facility on the weighbridge, besides CCTV cameras have not been installed and there is no display of rates fixed by the government. There are many complaints from all quarter over the allegations that the staff of the weighbridge are heavily extorting money from the truckers. The Transport department should conduct surprise checks to arrest such anomalies.”
