TURA: A late-night arson attack on a higher secondary school in the plains of West Garo Hills appears to bear the hallmark of a financial cover-up with police investigation not ruling out the money angle.
Unidentified persons set on fire Janapriya Higher Secondary School located at Bholarbitha in Chibinang late on Thursday night.
The fire destroyed three rooms, including one that housed the accounts wing and a room for Class X students.
The fire was spotted by locals shortly after 2am.
“In the course of investigation we have received special inputs about the incident and nothing is being ruled out. We have some identity about the perpetrators,” said district police chief Mukesh Kumar Singh.
It was found during preliminary investigation that the perpetrators specifically targeted the room where accounts and documents were maintained indicating that there was an attempt to erase evidence pertaining to financial matters.
The damaged rooms were found littered with documents and some were found dumped on the nearby river.
West Garo Hills police are opimistic about cracking the case in the next few days.
