SHILLONG: Two persons died in a landslide at a stone quarry at Lamlyer near Mawlyngngad in East Khasi Hills on Wednesday.
Police said two persons, Edwin Kharbihkhiew (42) and Pynbhalang Kharsohnoh (35), were buried alive. The bodies have been shifted to Shillong civil hospital for postmortem.
The incident has brought to light the poor safety measures at quarries and mines.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar said responsibility lies with the quarry owners for ensuring safety.
“I will seek a police report and if there are any shortcomings, we will book a case against the owner,” Dkhar said.
He further said the disaster management teams do conduct inspection of such quarries and mines during rainy season to ensure that all safety measures are taken to avoid loss of life.
