AR jawan held for harassing Garo woman on Kerala train

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/SHILLONG: A 30-year-old woman from Tura in West Garo Hills has filed a complaint with the railway police alleging that she was assaulted and verbally abused by a co-passenger during her journey to the city in the southern part of the country.
Following the complaint, the accused identified as Simson (32), an Assam Rifles jawan hailing from Alappuzha was arrested by the police on Sunday after going through the chart list of passengers who had travelled in the seats near the complainant. He will be produced before the Court on Monday.
Police said the Assam Rifles jawan working at Haflong, Assam, was in an inebriated condition. The accused, who was on a month-long leave, was travelling with the victim in the train.
A per the statement of the victim, the jawan tried to grab her on Friday night while she was sleeping, but she resisted.
Railway police at Thampanoor in Kerala have registered a case under Section 354, 354 A(1)(iv) of the IPC against the passenger who had alighted at Ernakulam after the train stopped there.
The woman who lodged the complaint works as a domestic help at NSS Karayogam here and was travelling to Kerala.
The train had reached Thiruvananthapuram on February 17 night. The woman, travelling in the AC-II compartment, was returning after visiting home.
The incident is said to have occurred in the wee hours of February 17 when Guwahati-Thiruvananthapuram Express had not reached the State capital, police sources said. (PTI with inputs by Our Reporter)
