Prof. Manobendra Bhattacharjee no more

SHILLONG: Eminent educationist and litterateur Prof. Manobendra Bhattacharjee breathed his last in Hyderabad on February 17. He was 84.
Professor Bhattacharjee is survived by wife Bharati Bhattacharjee and two sons.
During his long career spanning four decades, he served as the president and general secretary of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Shillong for several years at a stretch. It was during his association with the Parishad that he introduced the weekly magazine ‘Karmashala’ which continues even today.
Known for his ever witty nature, he was loved by all cutting across age groups. After completing his masters in Bengali from Gauhati University, he joined Sankardev College in 1964.
Soon, he got associated with literary activities in Shillong and earned a name for himself. Besides being deeply involved with literary activities, he was also an artist. He created logos and emblems for a number of institutions in the region, prominent being the logo of Silchar Polytechnic.
He also took keen interest in history and linguistics. He wrote several books and became associated with various literary associations across the North East and beyond.
Some of his books include Uttar Purba Bharoter Longai Obobahika Ebong Banabhatta: Prachin Itihasher Bismoy, Chhoto Golpo Sankalan, Sribhumir Banabhatta, etc. He also wrote articles and short stories for various publications in the North East and Bengal.
