SHILLONG: A delegation of the People’s Democratic Forum members met Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday and asked him to fast track approval of pending bills of the Khasi Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
KHADC chief executive member P.N Syiem told reporters after the meeting that PDF paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at Raj Bhavan. “We informed the Governor that there are 10 bills which have been passed by the Council but are waiting for his approval,” Syiem said.
Among the pending bills are the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of Council of Traditional Dorbar) Bill, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Nomination and Election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, Myntri and Rangbah Shnong of Malai Sohmat Syiemship) Bill 2016 and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Nominations and Election of the Syiem, Basan and Sordar Shnong of Mawiang Syiemship) Bill.
The delegation also informed the governor on Friday about the delay in approving names of Executive Members (EMs) of the KHADC as there are three vacant seats.
However, Syiem did not raise the contentious issue of the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill (VAB), 2015, and the issue of nominated MDC. The VAB is pending with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“The Council has submitted its reply on the 12-point queries to the MHA and we are waiting for the response,” the CEM said.
For nominated MDC, the Council had proposed the name of J. Reenbohn, a retired judge of the District Council Court, in December 2015.
However, the state government had preferred Irene Lyngdoh for the post and the same was communicated to then Governor V. Shanmuganathan for approval.
