Guv, political parties, churches send condolences
SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN: The Governor of Assam and Meghalaya, Banwarilal Purohit expressed grief at the death of 17 people killed in an accident in West Khasi Hills on Sunday morning.
Purohit conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and wished speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries.
Several political parties and church bodies have condoled the death of West Khasi Hills accident victims.
A condolence meeting was oganised by the BJP State Committee for those who have lost their lives in the accident which had occurred on Sunday.
Seventeen people have lost their lives and more than 60 were injured. The president of the party and the state leaders expressed condolences to the bereaved families. They also prayed for the departed souls.
A two-minute silence was also observed in the meeting.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said the party is with the bereaved families and has asked State Government to respond positively to the problems of the victims of the incident.
UDP MDC H.S Shylla also conveyed a condolence message. He slammed the driver of the truck for his irresponsibility and urged the authorities to punish him for his crime.
The Catholic Association of Shillong, in a statement has expressed its condolences to the bereaved families of those who have lost their lives in the accident. “Our heartfelt sympathy also goes to all those who have suffered injuring and struggling for their lives in the various hospitals”, the statement said.
The Presbyterian Youth Fellowship, general assembly the Presbyterian Church of India, has conveyed its condolence message to the bereaved families of the people who have lost their lives in the road accident.
Meanwhile, four NGOs of West Khasi Hills which include the West Khasi Student’s Union (WKSU), Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep Youth Council and the Nongstoin Region Local Taxi Owner & Driver Association (NRLTODA) offered their condolences to the bereaved families on Monday. In a statement issued to the media, Kitbok Pariong, president, HANM condemned the carelessness of the truck driver. “Such act should be topped by all drivers in West Khasi Hills,” Pariong urged the general public.
The organisations conducted a candle light ceremony at the accident spot in memory of the 17 people.
