Illegal transportation of timber at SWGH
SHILLONG: Gream Revile N Marak, Forester-I, Garobadha Forest Beat Office (SWGH) lodged a complaint that on Feb. 28 around 12.10 am, acting on a tip off about illegal transportation of timbers.A Tata DI pick-up (without number plate) was detected by forest staff while transporting timbers at Mellim and Bolonggitok areas (South West Garo Hills).
The officials chased the vehicle and overtook it near Betasing (SWGH). However, when the complainant got off the vehicle to conduct checking, the driver of Tata DI pick-up dashed him with the vehicle and fled away.
World Wildlife Day observed by MLCU
SHILLONG: With the objective to enhance understanding among students by linking classroom learning with on-site examples, the Department Of Environment & Traditional Ecosystems of Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong observed the World Wildlife Day by organising an awareness cum field exposure visit to Lady Hydari Park & Botanical Garden here on Friday.
The UG and PG students of the department were taught about the importance of wildlife and the urgent need to protect them. Though rich in biodiversity, many plant and animal species in Meghalaya have come under serious threat. Besides recording the details of plant and animal species present there, the students also delved in to the distribution, abundance and ecosystem functioning of the species present in these two protected areas.
They also studied the current level of conservation being practice there.The long-term objective of the programme was to draw an effective model of conservation for the wild flora and fauna of the state.
Four-year-old abducted, manages to escape
SHILLONG: A person lodged a complaint that Chitranath Koch (19 yrs) abducted his (complainant) four-year-old minor daughter from their residence at Tongnapara (SWGH) and took her to a nearby jungle.
However, the victim raised an alarm and following this, her father along with others rushed to the place and rescued her but the accused managed to escape.
Science Fair held on National Science Day
SHILLONG: Kamala Nehru Secondary School in collaboration with Agastya International Foundation organised a Science Fair on the occasion of National Science Day on February 28. The Chief guest was Theilin Phanbuh, chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Women. Around 40 science models were displayed and demonstrated by the students.
Orchid City Rotary awards people who excel in their work
SHILLONG: As part of the Vocational Service month, the Orchid City Rotary gave away four awards to people who have strived hard to excel in their own Vocations on Wednesday. As a part of the process, they have recognised four Vocations—Health worker, Entrepreneur, 108 Ambulance employees and Bank Employees.
The persons who were awarded are- Health worker Pharangteng Suting, Nurse, MIMHANS, Shillong for her service to humanity. Entrepreneur-Wanbor Nongspung for excelling and persisting to ensure excellence and persistence. 108 Ambulance employees, Blesstar Jana, Emergency Medical Technician, Mawsynram for rescuing lives, Branthon Marak, Ambulance Pilot, Raripara North Garo Hills.
Bank Employees, Team SBI For their untiring efforts to help people and the economy during demonetisation period between November 8, 2016 to December 30, 2016.
This year the awards were distributed by DGM, State Bank of India, at Hotel Pinewood.
Month-long awareness drive on renewable energy concludes
SHILLONG: A series of awareness programmes on need for use of renewable energy and availability of resources was held across Meghalaya in the month of February.
The programmes sponsored by the National Power Training Institute (NPTI) and conducted by TREE Foundation in association with Susconnect Pvt Ltd were held from February 2. Students and others took part in the programme which was held in six venues, each for three days.
“The students were very enthusiastic about the concept of renewable energy and some of them wanted to take up entrepreneurial initiatives for promoting green energy,” said Rutwik Phatak, an alumnus of IIM Shillong and currently president of TREE Foundation.
Phatak and some his former IIM colleagues are part of the recently-formed Transformation Through Research Education and Empowerment (TREE) Foundation, which comprises people from different professional backgrounds.
Most of the programme modules on technical aspects of renewable energy were developed by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE).
International Leo Expo at Shillong

BSF seizes cattle, smuggler held
Shillong: Acting on a tip-off BSF troops laid a trap near the Indo-Bangladesh border at Balughat in South West Garo Hills when Bangaladeshi smugglers along with their Indian associates were trying to smuggle cattle heads to Bangladesh. The area which is densely forested favours these smugglers in their illegal act.
The smugglers were challenged by the BSF party who were taking a herd of cattle to Bangladesh through the unfenced area. The troops even lobbed stun grenade which resulted in the seizure of 88 cattle. They also apprehended one Bangladeshi cattle smuggler who was later identified as Jasmuddin Sheikh (40 yrs). However other smugglers managed to flee. Cattle haat along the border are becoming a source of cattle for smuggling.
Similarly, in another incident, the BSF troops deployed at Nayabazar, Umsiang and Lyngkhat, at East Khasi Hills seized 19 cattle worth Rs. 2.5 lakhs while being smuggled to Bangladesh.
The BSF has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent menace of cattle smuggling.The apprehended persons and seized items were handed over to concerned department for further legal action.
Two arrested for burglary
JOWAI: Two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in a burglary case in Jowai. The two were identified as Marwi Lyngdoh of Sohkymphor village and Armi Shylla of Mookymphad Mihmyntdu.
According to the police, the duo broke into the house of Wanlang Rymbai at Chahtngit, Wahgate, Myntdu Jowai and stole household goods, including 3 gold rings valued at Rs 1,30,000, 2 gold chains worth Rs 1,85,000, cash of Rs 27,700, clothes worth of Rs 28,000, 90 kgs of rice valued at Rs.2970, 2 solar lights worth Rs 14,900, small cash of Rs 320, besides other household materials valued at Rs16,000. The total value of the stolen goods is Rs.4,04,890.
Police informed that both the accused were also involved in a similar case at Salini Colony recently. They were remanded to 4 days police custody.
