SHILLONG: A silent observation marked the first death anniversary of former Lok Sabha Speaker and ex-chief minister of Meghalaya PA Sangma.
Sangma’s family members prayed for the departed soul privately in Tura on Saturday.
When contacted, Tura MP Conrad Sangma said a prayer meeting was held at his residence in Tura. A few friends and his well-wishers spoke about his contributions on the occasion.
Relatives, friends and well-wishers also prayed for the departed soul at the cemetery in Tura.
There was no government function to recall the contribution of Sangma, who was once the chief minister of Meghalaya and among the tallest political stalwarts that the state has produced. Besides, he had taken up issues concerning Meghalaya in Parliament on behalf of the people of his state.
While Chief Minister Mukul Sangma wept in the Assembly and other leaders spoke high about him a year ago after the news of his death trickled in on March 4 last year, there were no words of recollections from any quarters of the State on Saturday.
It was during the start of the budget session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly last year that the news of his demise came in resulting in a pall of gloom over his home state and elsewhere in the country.
