SHILLONG: A meeting between the Syiem of Sohra and the Sirdar of Mawmluh Sirdarship was held on Monday regarding the concern over the anomalies in the functioning of the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) and the poor state of affairs especially in the inability to procure gunny bags.
A statement issued by Sohra Syiemship and Mawmluh Sirdarship on Monday said that with the overflow of clinkers and trucks waiting to market the MCCL cement, the company  ran short of gunny bags.
“The situation is not only ridiculous, but also shocking which is a setback for the management”, the traditional heads said.
According to the statement, there are parties who are determined to see that MCCL should not perform and that they benefit from its failure.
While the trucks are waiting for dispatch, eager customers were told to wait for some more days till the bags arrive and the management had no inkling about the requirement of gunny bags.
The offices of Sohra Syiemship and Mawmluh Sirdarship urged the management to stop the harassment to customers
They also demanded an inquiry into the matter.
Concern over short stay of trainee IAS officers
The offices of Sohra Syiemship and Mawmluh Sirdarship, also took exception to the Government’s practice of turning the Sohra Sub-Division into a training ground for fresh IAS officers.
“Time and again newly recruited IAS officers come to Sohra for a period a six months or one year before they are posted somewhere else for a longer tenure”, the statement said, adding that this contributes nothing but acts as hindrance to development works in the area.
Most of the inhabitants are villagers from even remote villages. Surprisingly, the Government places IAS officers who come as semi-trainees and do not take the trouble to learn the local language.
“If the Government is keen to send IAS officers to Sohra, then it is advisable that experienced ones are posted here with a wider tenure so that they can facilitate and bring needed developmental changes in the area”, the statement added.
Besides tourism, Sohra is emerging a destination for education with the coming up of NIT.
