SHILLONG: Members of the PWD employees’ body has asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to reinstate services of those who were terminated without prior notice.
A delegation from the All Meghalaya Officiating Employees PWD Roads and Building Association met Sangma on Tuesday.
Barrister Roy Thabah, general secretary of the association that comprises Grade III and Grade IV employees of PWD in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, told media persons that the chief minister would come to a decision after studying the procedures of the Government. The workers were on contracts.
“The chief minister said presently he cannot come up with a decision as he will have to study the procedure of the Government and how he will go about it,” he said.
When asked why they were terminated, Thabah said, “I don’t know and hence we met the chief minister.”
PWD Minister Martin Danggo also assured that he would look into the matter and then relay the matter to the chief minister.
Thabah said some of the workers who lost their job had worked for more than 30 years, 10 years and five years. Some of the women employees broke down after the meeting.
When reporters spoke to a lady, she said, “We struggled as we were without any payment for one year and five months. We are happy that the CM has taken up the matter as he is the right man.”
Sangma said, “They wanted an audience and they have tried to participate in discussion and the government will take a decision.”
Jop Shylla, president of the Congress Mahila, said, “I came across some women (from the association) who are mothers, so we took up the task to bring them here.”
