SHILLONG: The State Government will soon sign an agreement with 10 Dorbar Shnong of non municipal areas of the city on Wednesday for the implementation of solid waste management under the Asian Development Bank (ABD) programme.
The 10 localities include Lapalang, Nongrah, Umpling and Lumshohpoh amongst others.
Under the programme, the residents in the localities will be provided with colour coded dustbins for segregation of waste at the doorstep. Officials informed that under the second batch, 15-16 more localities of non-municipal areas are expected to sign the agreement with the State Government.
In addition, 10 localities would also be provided with 12 vehicles for carrying the segregated waste to the dumping ground at Marten.
Responding to a query, officials informed that with the signing of the agreement, the supplier would start shipment of the blue and green dustbins which would be distributed among the residents. The ADB, under the North East State Capital Cities Development Programme is implementing a programme on solid waste management while another programme on sewerage is yet to be implemented.
Though the programme of segregation at source in some residential localities has been partially successful, it is yet to make a positive impact in the commercial areas of the city.
The shopkeepers in the city were expected to buy their own dustbins but there is hardly any shopkeeper who has adhered to the directives and though the Shillong Municipal Board has vowed to take action against such defaulters, nothing much has been done so far.
