‘Conrad, James recommended names’

TURA: The Executive Committee of the GHADC is facing allegations of irregularities and influence from higher-ups in allotting border haats.
The EC has been accused of selecting some names recommended by Tura MP Conrad Sangma and his brother and Dadenggre MLA James K. Sangma.
Bappun Sangma, a social worker who has levelled the allegations, said the process of selection of border haats was illegal and needed to be set aside.
A final copy of the names selected for allotment as well as recommendations made by Conrad and James are available with the media and it was found that only six of the 18 names recommended figured on the list.
While only two of the names recommended by James found place on the selection list, four names recommended by Conrad were there.
Efforts to contact GHADC CEM Denang T. Sangma were unsuccessful. However, Deputy CEM Augustine R. Marak said allotment of the haats had already been settled in November last year. He further added that as per norms, haats are allotted to the highest bidder.
