SHILLONG: The residents of Raid Majai village under Sohra Syiemship took out a protest rally against the decision of the Syiem of Hima Sohra, Prime Freeman Sing Syiem, to dissolve the executive committee of Dorbar Raid Majai and remove Ekhel Marwein as Sordar of the village.
Carrying placards which read, “No Ekhel Sordar, no rest,” “Myntri Sohra, Rs 2000,” residents of nine localities falling under the raid participated in the rally and even burnt effigies of the Syiem and a Myntri of Majai.
The residents alleged that the Syiem of Hima Sohra has abused his power by granting land documents to non-tribals without consulting with the executive committee of the villages.Extending their allegiance to Marwein, the residents said Freeman has intended to dissolve the executive committee by removing Marwein and to substitute a deputy Syiem.
P. Sohtun, leader of the women’s organisation at Raid Majai, alleged that Freeman gave away land documents belonging to a woman whose husband recently passed away to non-tribals.
