SHILLONG: The A’chik Youth Council has urged the State Government to depute the officer in charge of District Transport office in Tura at the earliest. In a statement here on Tuesday, the group said in absence of a DTO, it becomes difficult for people to get official works, including applying for driving licence renewal, done.
USTM celebrates Pi Day
SHILLONG: The department of Mathematics, University of Science & Technology (USTM) celebrated Pi Day on Tuesday which is 30th celebration of the mathematical constant ð (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of ð. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day. USTM took up this initiative to observe Pi Day in a bid to motivate the students of mathematics so that they get to realise the importance of the subject and the career options that they may take up in the days ahead. The objective for observing Pi Day was to popularise the concept of Pi amongst the students of USTM, stated the CoD, Dr Gitumani Sarma.The programme was inaugurated by Dr P G Rao, Vice Chancellor followed by the felicitation of the guest speaker, Dr. Prabin Das, retired professor, Arya Vidyapith College. The students of the department presented papers based on various topics related to mathematics such as trigonometry, calculus, number theory and graph theory in the programme.
Illegal supply of cattle in SWGH
SHILLONG: The illegal smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh is taking place through Merengipara in South West Garo Hills. Predickson Sangma, A’king Nokma of Merengipara and Apelson Sangma, Secretary VDP lodged a complaint that supply of cattle has been going on through Merengipara (SWGH) to Bangladesh. However, they did not inform about the matter earlier, as Jitendro Koch along with Malson Sangma and 35 persons from Wasipgittim, Siragittim and Gembilgitim villages have threatened them with dire consequences, if they informed the matter to the police.
Need for GHADC website
TURA: A students’ organisation in Tura has asked the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to launch a website for transparency. The A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA), in its memorandum to GHADC chief executive member Denang T. Sangma, said other district councils in the State have their websites and GHADC, which is one of the oldest in the North East, should follow suit. “We would like you to declare through the website your different activities, works, receipts, expenditures, GHADC Acts, bills, notices etc, except those which are confidential, so that every citizen can be aware of it without having to file an RTI,” it said in its memorandum to Sangma.
NEET necessary for BHMS/BAMS studies
SHILLONG: In order to bring meritorious students to the AYUSH systems of medicine in the country through National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a decision has been taken that entrance exams by the private associations may be stopped from the academic session 2017-18 and all UG seats may be filled by considering the merit list of NEET, informed Director of Health Services (MI), Meghalaya, Shillong. Interested persons/students from the State aspiring to undergo BHMS/BAMS study can take note of the matter, a statement said.
SSA teachers want pending salary by March 31
TURA: The All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association has set March 31 deadline for the Government to release salary and pending arrear from April 1 last year. The teachers’ body has warned of filing public interest litigation if the government fails to fulfil its demand.
