Bike accident kills one in EGH
SHILLONG: One person died while another sustained injuries in a road accident at Williamngar in East Garo Hills. The incident happened on March 12, when one motorcycle skidded off the road leading to the death of Mahabir Das, while Rupar Ch Marak sustained injuries.
Cattle seized in Amlarem
JOWAI: Amlarem police on Tuesday seized 11 cattle meant for smuggling to Bangladesh from Muktapur. The West Jaintia Hills district police chief informed that Sub-Inspector W. Suting of Amlarem police station and his subordinates were conducting patrolling between Syndai and Muktapur when they detected the cattle. The smugglers, however, managed to escape. The cattle will be handed over to Dawki Customs office after completion of necessary formalities.
SK Oil distribution in WKH
NONGSTOIN: The Deputy Commissioner (Supply) of West Khasi Hills district has informed that SK Oil for March has been released and will be distributed through SK Oil retailers to identity card holders. The price for sub-dealer is Rs18.14 per litre, for public consumers in Nongstoin town it is Rs 21.14 per litre and that outside Nongstoin (rural) is Rs 21.64 per litre. The DC also asked consumers to inform the office in case there was no supply of oil or over-charging by dealers.
Duo attempts to kidnap 2 girls in WGH
SHILLONG: Two youths attempted to kidnap two girls, one of them a minor, at Bhogularbhita in West Garo Hills.  The girls’ mother, Rabea Bibi, lodged a complaint that on March 6 around 4 pm, Md Mobir Hussain and Md Sakir Hussain, tried to take away her 18 and 15-year-old daughters “with the intention to marry them”.  When she objected, the accused pelted stones injuring her 15-year-old daughter. A case has been registered, but one of the accused was granted bail. The other accused, being a minor, was handed over to the juvenile unit of the police. Police said though the complainant had said one of the girls sustained head injury, medical report showed there was no injury.
Missing brothers rescued in Tura return home
TURA: Tura Childline rescued two brothers from Aguragre under Rongram Outpost around 6 pm on March 10. On receiving a call from a concerned resident, the Bakdil Childline team went to the spot and rescued 13-year-old Dorman Rema Marak and nine-year-old Tipar Rema Marak. While talking to the brothers, it was found that they were staying in the forest of Jengal for two days.  The Child Welfare Committee sent the brothers to Children’s Home (Boys) during the time of investigation period under Section 33(4) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2000. V.A Sangma, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, and another member of the Committee handed over the brothers to their parents on March 13.
Jowai police lauds Good Samaritan
JOWAI: A certificate of appreciation was presented to Juban Thankhiew by the Officer in charge of Jowai police station for handing over an unclaimed sum of Rs 10,000 which he had found at an ICICI bank ATM last week. The cash was accidently left behind by a customer at the ATM kiosk. Following attempts made by bank officials and Jowai police to trace the owner of the cash, Samir Sinha of Newhill Jowai on Wednesday claimed ownership of the sum of money. After due verification, the cash was handed over to the customer.
Youth body lodges FIR against weighbridge staff
SHILLONG: The Niaw Wasa Youth Federation (NWYF) has lodged an FIR at Khliehriat Police Station against the authorities of Umtyra weighbridge in East Jaintia Hills alleging that it is running in the transport department of the State. In the complaint, the organisation has urged the police department to investigate the overloaded trucks. They alleged that people working in the weighbridge charge exorbitant rates for overloaded trucks and letting the trucks ply freely. “The authorities have violated the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court direction.” the organisation alleged.
PHE contractors asked to produce PAN card
SHILLONG: The Office of Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, TDS, Shillong has written to the Executive Engineer (EE) of PHE, Hills Division, that registered contractors in PHE department having contract works do not possess authentic PAN card. In this connection, the EE has directed the contractors to produce/reproduce PAN card within ten days with effect from February 20.
