SHILLONG: The traffic congestion in Nongstoin was raised by Opposition members in the Assembly.
In reply to a question by HSPDP’s Diosstarness Jyndiang, Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh said the Government is examining the proposal to create additional traffic posts in the district.
The Minister said in the absence of parking lots in the town, vehicles are compelled to park on the road side leading to traffic congestion.
Another factor is increase in the number of vehicles.
As many as 1,500 vehicles comprising local taxis, tourist sumos, buses, trucks and private vehicles ply daily in Nongstoin town. The Minister said commercial establishments, including banks, wholesale shops and others, in the district are concentrated in Nongstoin and the crowd is large on weekly market days.
The National Highway (44 E), which connects the town to Shillong, passes through the heart of the town while National Highway 127 E connects the town to Riangdo, Shallang and Rongjeng in East Garo Hills.
To a question by K.P Pangniang of HSPDP, the Minister said a committee will examine whether there is any need to shift the police station from the heart of the town to ease traffic congestion.
Ardent Basaiawmoit of HSPDP and Jemino Mawthoh of UDP have urged the Government to have a comprehensive approach to deal with the traffic congestion.
