TURA: The recent announcement on allocation of Rs 909.94 crore for the education sector by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has raised the hopes of a student body in Garo Hills which is of the view that a portion of the fund can be used for the upgradation of several educational institutions in the region.
The A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) reminded the government that despite the provincialization of the Williamnagar Government College years ago, it still has no permanent college building, sufficient teaching and non-teaching staff, a hostel, proper library or an auditorium. Informing that it is currently functioning in an old barrack-like building, the ASWA urged the government to upgrade the college.
It added that the Tura Government College was also facing the problem of shortage of buildings and teaching staff resulting in difficulty for students. Pointing out that many senior teachers in the commerce department have retired, the ASWA sought the recruitment of more teachers as well as the construction of buildings.
The ASWA urged the government to also upgrade the Captain Williamson Memorial Government College in Baghmara and other government higher secondary schools which are facing similar problems.
In addition, the association demanded that a ‘Garo Hills University’, solely run by the Meghalaya Government is established in the region to ensure that students with financial and other difficulties can pursue PhDs in various disciplines.
