Guwahati, July 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state is laying the foundation for the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate inclusive growth, improve governance and enhance its global competitiveness while addressing the risks associated with the emerging technology.

In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister shared a video outlining the government’s vision for AI and the initial steps being taken to integrate the technology into governance and development. “Assam seeks to harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for inclusive growth and improving its competitiveness, while addressing the risks that come with it,” CM Sarma said.

He added that the video explains the foundational measures being initiated by the state to prepare Assam for an AI-driven future. The announcement comes as governments across India are increasingly exploring AI-based solutions to improve public service delivery, strengthen administrative efficiency and support innovation-driven economic growth.

The Assam government has in recent years focused on expanding digital governance through online citizen services, digitisation of land records, technology-enabled policing and e-governance initiatives. Officials believe AI can further improve decision-making through data analytics, automate routine administrative processes and enhance service delivery in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture and disaster management.

The state has also been working to attract investments in emerging technologies and build digital infrastructure under its broader development agenda. Industry experts believe AI adoption can create new employment opportunities in technology, research and innovation while improving productivity across traditional sectors.

However, policymakers have also emphasised the need for ethical AI deployment, data privacy safeguards and measures to address concerns related to misinformation, algorithmic bias and workforce transition. The Chief Minister’s latest remarks indicate that the government intends to balance innovation with responsible regulation while creating an ecosystem that supports AI-led development.

The AI initiative is expected to complement Assam’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a technology and investment destination in the Northeast, with a focus on skill development, digital infrastructure and innovation-led economic growth. IANS
