TURA: A former GNLA rebel who deserted the outfit with a group of cadres to form the ASAK organisation has surrendered to police in Williamnagar on Thursday.
Raksim Ch Momin alias Arikam (22) surrendered before East Garo Hills SP Vivekanand Singh in the presence of church leaders and relatives, police said.
According to police, Raksim was one of the most notorious militants operating in East and South Garo Hills districts. He joined GNLA in 2012 as a member of the 5th batch.
In 2013, he deserted the outfit with commander Reding T. Sangma and jointly founded ASAK outfit. He subsequently surrendered in Baghmara in 2014 to escape pressure from the relentless counter-insurgency operations. He was arrested and lodged in Williamnagar jail.
He managed to escape from the prison in 2015 along with four others. They later joined the AMEF outfit of Jack Marak, a former GNLA commander. He abandoned AMEF and went solo committing several crimes in South Garo Hills before giving himself up on Thursday.
