Meghalaya girls maintain momentum

Nepal continues to impress on Day 2 of Junior Invitational (International) TT tourney

Shillong: Meghalaya’s Tanushree Das Gupta beat Nepal’s Manju Suwal 11-9, 11-5, 11-3 in the girls singles quarter-finals of the Junior Invitational (International) Table Tennis Tournament organised by the Rilbong Sports and Cultural Club as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations on the club’s premises here on Friday.
In another match, Anwesha Choudhury defeated State rival Camelia Diengdoh 14-12, 11-7, 11-6 to reach the semi-final. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Sonu Thapa defeated Sylvie Marwein 11-5, 11-9, 13-11 and Sikka Suwa outclassed her counterpart Gita Aryal 11-1, 15-13, 11-6 to advance to the semis.
In the boys singles quarter-finals, Meghalaya’s Suranjit Dey defeated Nepal’s Bipul Maharjan 11-9, 11-7, 11-8, while, Nepal’s Mani Kumar Lama defeated Ritiz Joshi (3-2). Narayan Ghimire outplayed Bhutan’s Leki Dorji (3-0) and Santoo Shrestha crushed Meghalaya’s Ryan Kharwanlang (3-0) to reach the semi-finals.
Earlier in the day, Napal’s Manju Suwal, Sikka Suwal, Gita Ayral, Sonu Thapa, Meghalaya’s Sylvie Marwien, Anwesha Choudhury and Camelia diengdoh won their respective matches of the girls individual event and progressed to the quarter-finals.
In the boys singles event, Nepal’s Bipul Maharjan, Mani Kumar, Ritiz Joshi, Narayan Ghimire, Santoo Shrestha and Bhutan’s Leki Dorji won their respective matches and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Meghalaya’s Camelia Diengdoh and Sylvie Marwein defeated Nepal’s Sonu Thapa and Sikka Suwa 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 (3-1) to advance to the girls doubles semi-finals. In other girls doubles quarter final matches , Nepal’s Sujata amd Gita defeated Wanpyntngen and Diva 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 (3-0) and Bhutan’s S Deka and S Deki defeated Meghalaya’s Ilapynkmen and Badaaihun 11-8, 11-2, 11-6 (3-0).
Meanwhile, Meghalaya lost both the boys doubles quarter final matches during the day. Nepal’s Narayan and Bipul edged past Meghalaya’s Aryan and Ryan 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 (3-0), while, Bhutan’s Leki and Sumit defeated Anubhav and Freddy 11-6, 11-1, 4-11, 11-9 (3-1).
Nepal dominated the mixed doubles quarter final event by winning all the four quarter final matches. Nepal’s Bipul and Sujata beat Meghalaya’s Tanushree and Suranjit 11-8, 13-11, 7-11, 11-13, 11-7 (3-2), while Nepal’s Mani and Sikka defeated their countrymen Ritiz and Manju 11-2, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 (3-1). In other matches Nepal’s Narayan and Sonu beat Bhutan’s Leki and Sonam Deki 11-6, 11-7, 11-5 (3-0) and Nepal’s Santoo and Gita defeated Meghalaya’s Anubhav and Sylvie 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, 12-10 (3-1)
At the end of Day 2, Meghalaya maintained lead in the girls’ team event while Nepal remained on top in the boys’ event.
