Annual school meet concludes at Nongstoin

NONGSTOIN: A two-day sport meet conducted by the Assembly of God, Mawthohthang Siejlieh, West Khasi Hills concluded on Friday at Nongpathar Stadium in which Rev. Dr. MS Nongrem, Headmaster of the school attended as chief guest. Altogether four houses participated in the meet. The Athletic meet has been divided into three categories of age group comprising Junior, Sub-Junior and Senior respectively. Red House with 326 point emerged as overall champion in the meet. Willbetstar Lyngdoh of Blue House in Sub Junior category, Johnson K Bani of Green House in Junior category and Fullmoon Pariong from Blue House in Senior category were awarded as the Best Boy in their respective categories. In the Sub Junior girls category, Naphipalei Myrthong from Green House emerged as Best Girl, while, Rikynti Syiemlieh from Blue House in Junior category and Pynhunshisha Syiemlieh of Blue House in Senior category bagged the award.  The chief guest gave away prizes to the winners of various events.

Australian GP: Hamilton sets pace in opening practice
Melbourne: Lewis Hamilton sizzled in the opening practice sessions at the Australian Grand Prix as he sent an ominous message to his rivals for the new Formula One season on Friday. The triple world champion bossed the field in the afternoon run to hold a half-second gap over Ferrari title rival Sebastian Vettel and his new Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton followed up his field-leading fastest lap of 1:24.220 in the first session with a blistering 1:23.620 around Albert Park in the late afternoon. It was around one-tenth of a second off Vettel’s record lap in Melbourne of 1:23.529, posted for Red Bull in qualifying ahead of his 2011 race victory. Finland’s Bottas slotted smoothly into the Mercedes team environment with a best lap of 1:24.176. (AFP)

Messi’s goal takes Argentina to WC qualification zone
Buenos Aires: Ace forward Lionel Messi helped Argentina beat Chile 1-0 in an intense football match of the South American qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, putting the Albiceleste in the direct qualification zone. Messi scored the winning goal from a penalty in the 16th minute on Thursday, reports Efe. The Argentine squad managed to kill two birds with one stone; first, they made their comeback against Chile after La Roja defeated them in the last two Copa America finals. Secondly, Argentina climbed to third place with 22 points, one less than Uruguay and eight behind Brazil, putting the Albiceleste in the direct qualification zone for the World Cup. Meanwhile, Chile dropped to sixth place with 20 points, outside the qualifying zone. In the next round, Argentina will visit Bolivia on Tuesday in La Paz, while Chile will host Venezuela in Santiago.
