SHILLONG: The FKJGP Mawlai Circle will form an anti-narcotic vigilante team with an aim to check the menace in the area. The circle president, Marbud Dkhar, said according to reports by Child Care, 50 percent of the street children in the city become drug addicts.  Dkhar was speaking at an FKJGP-Mawlai meeting — which was convened to discuss the growing menace of drugs, theft and influx — at the Community Hall in Mawlai Phudmuri on Saturday.
Statistics show that Jaintia Hills has over 5,398 drug users, East Khasi Hills 5,113, Ri Bhoi 2,397, West Garo Hills 1,100, South Garo Hills 800. All the 17,833 users are registered with Child Care. Dkhar said that police at Mawlai have arrested 19 suppliers and customers of drugs till date.
