US President Donald Trump has had to concede defeat on his bid to repeal ObamaCare. House Republican leaders facing a revolt among conservatives and moderates in their ranks pulled legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act from consideration on the floor of the House of Representatives. It was a humiliating defeat for Trump on his first legislative showdown. The Bill had been promised for seven years since the day President Barack Obama signed his healthcare act into law. In a way it was a good moment for Democrats when the bill had to be withdrawn. The Republican bill had mandated that almost everyone have health insurance with a system of age-based tax credits to purchase health insurance. The conservatives in the party wanted a far more thorough eradication of the Affordable Care Act. Nor did it have the support of more moderate Republicans who were aware of the fact that the Bill may leave 24 million more Americans without insurance.
It is also reported that a bill seeking to prevent US companies from outsourcing jobs overseas by abusing the H-1B programme has been reintroduced in the House. It has been introduced by both a Democratic Congressman and his Republican colleague. Training workers in the US and then moving these jobs to another country will be stopped if the bill is passed. It is called the ‘Keeping American Jobs Act.’ The passage of the Bill will significantly hit Indian BPOs of American companies and lead to massive unemployment. Indian external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has taken up the issue with the US government with great concern.
