1 killed in WKH road accident
SHILLONG: One person died while two others were injured in a road accident in West Khasi Hills. The incident occurred on March 27, when a Maruti Alto-800 (ML-05M-8507) driven by Gerbas Kharpran (30) met with an accident at Mawlangren Kynshi village. In the incident, one occupant of the vehicle namely, Rosterfield Mawlong (25) died on the spot while the driver and another occupant sustained injuries.
Advisory on cyber crime
SHILLONG: Social media poses many threats to the society. With easy access to internet, crime is also advancing, making social media a dangerous platform for users as most of the offender uses social media in a negative way. As such cases have come to the notice of the Police (CID) Department wherein personal videos of some persons were downloaded, edited into a vulgar one and then went viral on Whatsapp, Youtube, Instagram and others. This is an offence under Information Technology Act, 2000. Thereby, the ADG has warned social media users not to engage in illegal activities.
Road project delay worries village heads
NONGPOH: The Synjuk ki Dorbar Shnong or traditional heads, of six villages in Ri Bhoi have voiced their concern over the inordinate delay in the 7.5-km road project under the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to connect Umjarasi with Langpadon in Umsning constituency. The traditional heads accused the contractor of delaying the project. Residents of the six villages are facing problems in transporting their agricultural produce to local markets. One of the headmen said the PMGSY road project, which was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 6 crore, started in 2014. The traditional heads have sought the intervention of the local MLA and the MDC in expediting the project.
No end to cattle smuggling
SHILLONG: BSF troops deployed in Tuka in East Khasi Hills seized cattle being smuggled into Bangladesh. The smugglers, however, escaped. The BSF found 41 animals being herded across the border. In seven other instances, BSF jawans seized 72 animals being smuggled into Bangladesh. In the last one week, BSF seized 393 animals, 699 bottles of liquor and contraband items worth more than Rs 55 lakh.
Outreach programme
SHILLONG: BSF recently organised outreach programmes at Khliehriat and Byndihati in East Jaintia Hills to create awareness among students on the ‘Sentinels of Border’. Around 550 students participated. They also got the opportunity to see the artillery collection of the border force.
Coal deal fraud
SHILLONG: Donbok W Lyngdoh (38) lodged a complaint that on March 9, Manlang Kharkrang entered into a written agreement with the complainant for lifting of coal from the complainant’s quarry at Pyndenglawar village in West Khasi Hills. However, the person has lifted coal valued around Rs 21,70,000 for which he paid Rs. 3 lakhs and agreed to pay the balance in two installments after six months but failed to do so.
5 held for NGT ban violation
SHILLONG: Five persons were arrested in East Jaintia Hills for engaging themselves in coal mining, violating NGT order. L.G.M. Kharmih, EAC, East Jaintia Hills lodged a complaint that on March 28, while conducting coal mine raids in the area of Pathar Quarry, five people identified as Monlang Pashiang (30), Ajit Singh (34), Durga Thapa (49), Krishna Chandra Bahadur Pradhan (35) and Prajal Mongar (29) were apprehended while they were engaged in mining of coal.
Woman raped in EJH
SHILLONG: A girl was raped in East Jaintia Hills on March 29. The victim has lodged a complaint that Md. Samser Ali forcibly took her to his residence and raped her, while she was returning home.

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has sent a memorandum to the Director of Health and Services requesting upgradation Dagal PHC to CHC under Songsak Development Block, Chiading Sub-center to PHC under Samanda Development Block, Jamge Sub-Center to PHC under Songsak Development Block and Rongrenggre State Dispensary to PHC under Samanda Development Block, Rongbinggre Sub-Center to PHC under Samanda Development, Nengkra Sub-Center to PHC under Samanda Development Block which are all located in East Garo Hills.
Villager robbed of Rs 25,000
JOWAI: A group of miscreants robbed a villager from Thadmuthlong B in West Jaintia Hills of Rs 25,000. In his complaint, the villager, Deimi Lyngdoh, said he sustained injuries when a truck hit his car near the village around 10pm on March 27. Then the truck driver and other occupants beat him up and he became unconscious. When he gained consciousness, he saw his mobile phone and Rs 25,000 cash were missing.
Consumer rights
SHILLONG: As part of the International Consumer Rights Day which is observed every year on March 15, the Department of Social Work, Martin Luther Christian University organised an awareness campaign on Consumer Rights at Umlyngka in East Khasi Hills District. The awareness programme was sponsored by the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply).
Science test
SHILLONG: The State Council of Science, Technology & Environment, along with Vigyan Prasar, a Central autonomous institution of the Department of Science & Technology, conducted the screening test for the Sci-connect Programme to nurture young talents from the North-East on Science on Wednesday across the State.
