SHILLONG: The second round of the Pulse Polio Immunitisation programme will be conducted on Monday in the state.
The programme aims at giving two drops of the Oral Polio Vaccine to all children below 5 years of age at the nearest polio booth. Since the disease is a viral infection that can cause permanent paralysis or even death, and young children are at particular risk from it.
A statement from the National Health Mission said that the current campaign of the Pulse Polio round will be inaugurated on Saturday by H. M. Shangpliang, Secretary Health & Family Welfare, cum Mission Director National Health Mission.
The round would be conducted across the State with all 11 districts participating in the same. It was appealed to all parents, guardians and citizens to bring their children to the nearest polio booth or health facility.
The children who get the vaccine in the booth are best protected and the greater the number of children who get immunised together, the greater would be the immunity of the community.
April 3-5 in Nongstoin
The District Medical & Health Officer, Nonstoin in West Khasi Hills District informed that the Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (2nd round) for children from 0 to 5 years old will start from April 3-5.
The aim of this programme is to prevent children from the deadly disease of polio. Two drops of vaccine will be given and children who are regularly immunised should also be included. Therefore the Health officer had urged the parents to take their children to the nearest CHC/PHC and Sub Centre for immunisation.
