Assam Regimental Centre lift 101 Area Football C’ship
Shillong: The 101 Area Football Championship 2017-18 conducted at Assam Regimental Centre under the aegis of Headquarters 101 Area from March 28 concluded on Friday. A total of four teams from various Army formations participated. In the thrilling final match played between Assam Regimental Centre and 58 GTC football team at Garrison Ground, Assam Regimental Centre defeated 58 GTC 2-0 to win the Championship.  Chief Guest of the closing ceremony Major General Satish Kumar Dutta, Chief of Staff, 101 Area,  gave away the prizes to the winners and runners up. Major General Satish Kumar Dutta congratulated the winners and also complimented Assam Regimental Centre for organising the event flawlessly.

Wahingdoh Sports Club U-18 trial begins today
SHILLONG: The trials for selection in the U-18 Wahingdoh Sports Club side will be held at 2nd Ground Polo from 9 am onwards on April 1. Boys born on or before April 1, 2000 can go for the trial along with their original certificate.

United, Real Madrid most valued football clubs’
London: According to auditing giants KPMG, Real Madrid and Manchester United are the most valuable football clubs in the world. Both Manchester United and Real Madrid are valued at $3.09 billion. FC Barcelona are third, valued at $2.9 billion, ahead of Bayern Munich, rated at $2.35 billion according to KPMG’s annual report. The top five is completed by Arsenal ($1.86 billion) with the next three places going to Manchester City ($1.71 billion), Chelsea ($1.6 billon) and Liverpool ($1.39 billion). Juventus, worth $1.05 billion, and PSG ($900.37 million) complete the top 10. (IANS)

Copa America could feature European teams
Rio de Janeiro: The 2019 Copa America here could feature four teams from Europe under a proposal to expand football’s oldest continental tournament. South American football governing body CONMEBOL is considering a plan to invite Spain, Portugal, France and Italy to participate in the competition, according to Brazilian news service Globo Esporte on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency. It said a meeting of CONMEBOL officials in the coming weeks would decide whether the tournament will be expanded from its current 10-team format. (IANS)

FIFA recommends 48 slots for World Cup 2026
Geneva: The Bureau of the FIFA Council agreed on a proposed slot allocation among the six confederations for the World Cup 2026, which will witness 48 teams in the finals. According to the proposal on Thursday, the split of 46 direct berths will see Asia get eight direct slots up from the four and a half spots they have currently, reports Xinhua news agency.  Africa will get nine slots while CONCACAF, which represents north and central America will get six. Oceania, which currently has half a slot wherein the top nation from the regional qualifiers faces a play-off against the fifth country from either South America or Asia, will get a full slot. Hosts Indonesia seeks 20,000 volunteers for Asian Games
Jakarta: Host Indonesia is looking for about 20,000 volunteers for the 18th Asian Games next year, the organising committee said here on Friday. The number of volunteers for each sport is being calculated by the committee, said Harry Warga Negara, the committee secretary, reports Xinhua news agency. “The enthusiasm of the people, particularly university students, to be volunteers for the Asian Games is high,” he said.  The 18th Asian Games will be held in two cities, including the country’ s capital of Jakarta and Palembang city, the provincial capital of South Sumatra.
