SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) is optimistic that MLAs and MDCs will emerge from the party in the 2018 Assembly polls and 2019 Council polls.
The regional party which celebrated its 15 years journey, which aims to improve its innings in the political scenario, addressed the press at Jaiaw on Tuesday.
Batkupar Wahlang, general secretary of the party said, “The issue that we are working on will receive due recognition from the public.”
Referring that 16 years Assembly sessions are being held elsewhere, he said, “Assembly sessions are being held in entertainment halls, be it the State Central Library or Rilbong Arts or the Culture hall. That is why we see ministers and MLAs are engaged in dancing. We need to be serious,” Wahlang said.
KHNAM president, Adelbert Nongrum spoke about the party as being a political movement and not political party, adding that the party will come out with vision documentation.
The party also invited non-tribal electorates. While addressing the gathering, Nongrum said, “We are not anti-non-tribal but a party who fights for rights. We are not against bonafide citizens of the state, we are against illegal immigrants.”
Speaking about the CM level meet between Assam and Meghalaya which was convened on Saturday, Nongrum said, “Why the urgency now? What happened to the five years when Congress ruled the Centre, Assam and is now ruling Meghalaya?”
Criticising the government for militancy in the state, he said, “When the youth have already taken up arms, the state government would cajole them with rehabilitation package.”
The party has asserted that the reservation policy is not to divide the people but to rectify some clauses in the state reservation policy.
