NONGPOH: Aimed at promoting organic farming in the state, the Tea Board of India on Saturday organised a one-day workshop on organic tea cultivation at Rural Resources Training Centre, Umran. Tea growers from all parts of the state took part in the workshop enthusiastically.
The dignitaries attending the workshop includes District Horticulture Officer, G Shylla as Special Guest, DM Kakati, Assistant Director, Tea Development, Guwahati, KW Chyne, Secretary, Ri Bhoi Tea Growers Association, BG Chakraborty, president, Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers Association (CISTA), S Hazra, Deputy Director, Small Tea Growers Directorate, Dibrugarh, MS Lyngdoh, incharge Umsning Tea Development Center & Assistant Director Agriculture, Shillong and Dr S Sen, Assistant Advisory Officer, TRA.
Incharge of Umsning TDC, MS Lyngdoh, informed that at present the center is receiving lots of positive responses and success as the certified organic tea known as Meg Tea being produced by the centre is of a very high quality and can be exported abroad.
Lyngdoh informed that at present, the government under the Horticulture Department is currently paying for the expenditures of the farmers in getting organic certification costing Rs 2000 per ha (hectare), he added.
The programme was chaired by SG Momin, Development Officer Tea Board, Umsning.
