Over 68 per cent poor in State

SHILLONG: Over 68 per cent of the Meghalaya population is considered poor, according to a government data.
Quoting the 2011 socio-economic caste census of the Centre, a State government official said as per the methodology adopted by the Centre in socio-economic caste census, 31.22% households of the State are excluded and the remaining 68.8% have been included in the poor category.
As far as assistance to ensure proper amenities to the poor is concerned, the government said it had taken several initiatives to ameliorate the conditions of the economically weaker sections of the society.
The government claimed that the initiatives include housing, education, healthcare, livelihood and employment opportunities, skilling, financial inclusions and entrepreneurship development.
