Shangpliang for quality care of survivors of crime
SHILLONG: H. M. Shangpliang, Secretary, Social Welfare Department has called for easing out the problems being faced by survivors of rape and other crimes.Addressing the recent valedictory function at St. Mary’s College on Gender Justice: Legal Awareness, Preventive and Redressal Measures on Crime against Women, Shangpliang stressed the need to address the psychological trauma and mental health of survivors.He emphasised on quality care and transforming society’s attitudes towards the survivors.

Raj Bhavan to remain open for school children on April 19
Shillong: The Deputy Secretary, Governor of Meghalaya, has informed that Raj Bhavan will be kept open for school children in uniforms on April 19 from 10am to 5pm to enable them to view the spring bloom of flowers.
The children should be accompanied by their teachers. The principals of the schools that wish to send their children to visit the Raj Bhavan have to convey their participation indicating the number of children and the accompanying teachers in advance.

Complaint lodged against illegal transportation of timber
SHILLONG: Police lodged a suo-moto complaint that on February 16, one timber laden truck (AS-01FC-0261) capsized at Rongdengre village in West Garo Hills.
During enquiry it was found that the truck was transporting timbers without obtaining permission from the concerned authority. Later, one Dipu Sharma and Md. Tayzudin Mondal, owner and driver of the truck surrendered at Jengjal outpost.

Two men looted by unidentified miscreants
SHILLONG: Justin D Shira lodged a complaint that on April 9 around 1.15 am, unidentified miscreants armed with iron bars, screw drivers, daggers came to his house at Nangalbibra in South Garo Hills.
They attacked him and his son-in-law Augustine D Shira and looted Rs 5 lakh and three cell-phones with SIM cards.

NIT organises two-day international conference
Shillong: The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) of the National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya recently organised a two-day international conference on Innovations in Electronics, Signal Processing and Communication at the NEC Secretariat. The conference was organised to provide a platform for academicians, researchers and engineers to disseminate, interact and discuss about the various current research findings, recent development and future trends in the areas of Electronics, Signal processing and Communications. It encouraged the dissemination of R&D linked to the industry. The programme included expert lectures, oral and demo presentations. Some of the eminent speakers and resource persons of the conference included Prof. Arokiaswami Alphones, NTU Singapore and H.S. Jattana, Senior Scientist, Group Head – Design & Process Group, SCL – ISRO, among others.

RKM annual celebrationsfrom today
SHILLONG: The annual celebration of Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong, will be held on April 14, 15 and 16 from 3 pm onwards on its Laitumkhrah premises. Artists from different parts of the country will perform on the occasion.
The programme which includes public meetings will be attended by Swami Satyeshanandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashram Chandigarh, Swami Atmashuddhanandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Guwahati, Swami Shastrajnanandaji Maharaj, Principal, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandir, Belur Math, Howrah, Swami Anuraganandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Cherrapunjee and Swami Raghunayakanandaji Maharaj, Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad.
The three- day public meetings will be followed by cultural programmes where local as well as artistes from Kolkata will participate. There will also be a Gita Yajna on April 16.

Digital payment campaign and road safety awareness held
SHILLONG: Under the aegis of 61 Meghalaya NCC Girls Battalion, a Digital Payment Campaign and Road Safety Awareness Programme was organised by the NCC, NSS of Shillong College at the college premises on Thursday. The programme was held in association with State Bank of India and the Traffic Department of the State police.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal of Shillong College Dr. K. D. Ramsiej stated that NCC is one of those extra curricular activities that developed his confidence and moulded his personality. The Commanding Officer of 61 Meghalaya Girls Battlaion, Col.P. C.Pawar said that the target group of cadets were chosen so that they can further the digital empowerment of citizens through emphasis on digital literacy and availability of digital resources apart from influencing others to observe Road Safety.  SBI Chief Manager, Region 1, Lalnilawmi said that the programme is in keeping with the Prime Minister’s initiative of Digital India, a programme to transform India into digital empowered society and knowledge economy. The team from SBI enlightened the cadets about the need and benefits of going cashless besides providing information about various apps that are available for going cashless. The personnel from Rynjah traffic department under the leadership of Inspector K D Marngar, SI T.N. Marak and constable B.N. Dkhar highlighted on Road Safety. Marngar urged the young cadets to obey traffic rules, develop in themselves and others a civic sense.

BSF nabs Indian cattle smuggler
Shillong: The BSF troops deployed at Baghmara, South Garo Hills district observed some suspicious movement of suspects with cattle near International border. The BSF party encircled the suspected area and apprehended one Indian cattle smuggler along with a cattle while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. The cattle smuggler was later identified as Namdy Limphu (32 ), a resident of Chiringiri village,Rongra police station under South Garo Hills. He confessed before the BSF that he was earlier apprehended on November 30 2015. The BSF has seized 129 cattle, and contraband items worth more than Rs 23 lakh, while being smuggled out from India to Bangladesh on the International Border along Meghalaya during the last four days. Apprehended persons and seized items were handed over to concern department for further legal action.

1 killed in mishap, scores injured
SHILLONG: One person died and scores of people were injured in a spate of road mishaps across the state.
On Tuesday night, around 10.30 pm, one jeep (ML-04-3918) driven by Kyrshan Sohtun knocked down one Pynbianglang Khongsit at Madanryting, Shillong. In the incident, the victim was shifted to Civil Hospital Shillong, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In another accident which took place on the same night, one vehicle (ML-06-4420) driven by Diborlin Marngar capsized at Kynshi Bangla village in West Khasi Hills. The driver was found to be unconscious and shifted to TSM Hospital, Mairang where he was referred to CH Shillong for treatment.
On the same evening, an accident took place between one truck (ML-10A-0660) driven by Reading Thangkhiew and one motorcycle (AS-11M-3946) ridden by Satyajit Dutta (27) at Pyllun village, Shillong By-pass. The motorcycle rider sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to Silchar Hospital, Assam, while one pillion rider sustained minor injuries and was taken to CHC Bhoirymbong.
On Thursday evening, an accident took place between one bus (ML-05J-6128) driven by Elington Wanniang and one Maruti Alto (ML-12-0462) driven by Afterford Wanniang near Tyrsad village in East Khasi Hills District in which the driver and two occupants of the Maruti Alto sustained injuries and were shifted to CH Shillong.
