SHILLONG: Khyndailad is one of the busiest junctions in the town with hundreds of vehicles and an equal number of pedestrians trying to take over the road while paying little heed to traffic regulations.
The perpetual confusion that prevails in the area is also due to wrong parking and carelessness of commuters.
Local taxis are often seen parked in the middle of the road blocking the way of vehicles coming from Jail Road. Commuters waiting for taxis often cross the embarkation point and add to the chaos.
Buses also flout rules by stopping anywhere on the road.
The chaos prevails despite the presence of traffic police personnel.
The volume of cars is so huge that most of the time the traffic guards remain busy in controlling the moving vehicles and can pay little attention to wrong parking.
A police official said the situation is worst in Khyndailad due to the presence of an embarkation point and the problem is doubled by hawkers who set up shops on the road in the evening.
For pedestrians, the situation is nothing less than a nightmare. With no footpaths in the area, people are forced to dodge the vehicles on the road.
Some shop owners in the area said that accidents did not take place till date was only because vehicles move slowly in the congested area.
“There seems to be no solution in sight at the moment,” said a concerned citizen.
Attempts were made to contact the SP (Traffic) and the Additional SP (Traffic) for their reaction on the issue but they could not be contacted.
