SHILLONG: The BJP has slammed UDP member and former FKJGP leader Joe Marwein for criticising the saffron party over its threat to file FIR against anyone trying to tarnish the image of the party.
BJP’s State unit vice president and spokesperson Edmund Sangma on Thursday said Marwein should be reminded of the “constitutional ethics” which, besides granting the right to freedom of expression, also ensures that citizens abide by the law of the land and exercise self-restraint.
“The personal bias that Marwein has against the BJP is perceptible from the fact that he has failed to understand the judiciousness of the comment of BJP vice president J.A Lyngdoh pertaining to filing of FIR against people deliberately engaged in tarnishing the image of BJP by way of misleading the electorate and circulating false information through social media ahead of the assembly election next year which constitutes offences,” he said.
The party also questioned Marwein for taking up the cudgel to defend the “prospective offenders”.
“The contradiction of Marwein is further evident from the fact that while he vouches for India to be a free country with freedom of expression, he is out to negate the same for others and has grossly misconstrued the very essence of the freedom of expression that encourages diverse and constructive criticism based on facts and not necessarily biased, mala fide and malicious propaganda to be justified under the garb of it,” Sangma added.
