Nongstoin-Wahkaji revised project cost awaits approval

SHILLONG: The Government has sent the revised cost estimate for the Nongstoin-Wahkaji road project to the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways for approval.
The State had recently invited bidders for the two-laning project. Sources privy to the developments said the bidding was on April 21. The earlier project cost for the 43.06-km road was Rs 365.66 crore.
The project has been severely opposed by the Khasi Students’ Union and the North East Students’ Organisation who are claiming that the road upgradation is aimed at facilitating uranium mining. Meanwhile, the PWD has received the final detailed project report for the upgradation of Wahkaji-Phlangdiloin-Ranikor road.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation, PWD Meghalaya and the consultant will soon an agreement for implementation of the project.
The 35-km road is to be taken up at a cost of Rs 259.37 crore and the consultant for the project is M/s Chaitanaya Projects Consulting Pvt Ltd.
