NONGPOH: Ri Bhoi police seized skins of pangolins and six bags of wild ginger from an eatery on NH-6 on Tuesday night. They detained a 37-year-old man in this connection.
Lumlang Mawnai, vice president of the North Khasi Hills unit of the FKJGP, said a villager from Mawtnum first noticed the skins and the bags inside the dhaba and informed the federation.
Later, FKJGP members visited the dhaba, owned by Babul Sarkar, a local, to verify the information. They reported this to the police who later identified the smuggler as Lalhming Liana (37 years) from Kelsih village in Mizoram.
Mawnai said the skins were brought from Itanagar and were being taken to Aizawl. Liana told police that the products were meant for preparing medicines.
The seized products were handed over to the district wildlife office that will further investigate the matter. The man will be booked under the Wildlife Act for possessing the skins.
