Jaintia Hills body moves NGT against cement cos

SHILLONG: The Jaintia People Welfare Organization (JPWO) has lodged a complaint with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on the pollution and damage to the environment caused by cement companies in East Jaintia Hills.
JPWO president Shotis Dkhar said that companies like Cement Manufacturing Company Ltd, Meghalaya Cement Ltd, Adhunik Cement Pvt Ltd, Hills Cement Pvt Ltd, Amrit Cement Pvt Ltd, etc., are proving hazardous to the people and wildlife in the area.
He added that the companies emit polluted smoke, dust and intense noise coming out from the plants has led to health hazards in the surrounding areas.
Dkhar stated that the presence of cement plants has caused environmental degradation in the region.
