NONGPOH: Traditional heads of villages near the Sacred Forest in Ri Bhoi district have raised concern over the new stone quarry near the forest and the impact on environment that will have.
The chief of Raid Marwet, where the Sacred Grove is located, met the heads of the nearby villages on Thursday to have a threadbare discussion on the issue.
Ken Syiem, the chief Raid Marwet, and other heads pointed out that the quarry will not only disturb the sanctity and serenity of the forest but will also lead to environmental hazards in the long run like the caving in of the Sacred Grove at Killing village.
The quarry is owned by Parli Jarin, a villager from Killing, said Ioannis Narleng, headman of Baridua village.
Syiem said though a no-objection certificate was issued for stone mining the quarry will not be allowed to function.
A public meeting will be organised shortly at Baridua village.
