Meghalaya emerge champions in junior national football

SHILLONG: Meghalaya emerged champions of the 51st Junior National Football Championship for boys (Tier II) BC Roy Trophy defeating Karnataka 3-2 via tie-breaker at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Thursday evening.
The match ended goalless in the full 90 minutes despite some aggressive football by both sides. Meghalaya also squandered a couple of half chances and the story was the same in extra time leading the match to the tie-breaker.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, Meghalaya converted three of the five chances through Stephanson Pale, Banskhemlang Mawlong and Manbhakupar Iawphniaw.
Following the win Meghalaya have been promoted to Tier I of the event and will play sides like Mizoram, Kerala, West Bengal and Punjab in the next edition.
Meghalaya had defeated Maharashtra 2-0 to reach the final.
