SHILLONG: UDP’s H.S Shylla said on Sunday there was a need to strengthen the three District Councils in Meghalaya.
The Nongkrem MDC, in a statement, said the Councils should have separate town development department, building bylaws (Land Development and Building Regulation 2015, KHADC) and to appoint staff for the matter.
Shylla said fund for census town development from the Ministry of Urban Development should be disbursed through the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
He pointed out that the notion that census towns do not fall under the jurisdiction of the KHADC but are under MUDA is misleading.
Shylla said some of the census towns are Mawlai, Mawpat, Pynthor, Nongmynsong, Umpling, Nongthymmai, Madanrting, Umroi, Nongkseh, Umlyngka, Lawsohtun and Sohra (Cherrapunjee).
He added that such towns will remain under the jurisdiction of the KHADC.
